Poor quality floats but greater participation seen this year

MARGAO: The Goa Carnival 2014 evoked huge response on Sunday as people of Salcete descended in the commercial capital in thousands to witness the grand float parade this evening.
While the quality of the floats was much to be desired, people from all walks of life lined up the float parade from the Holy Spirit square to the Margao Municipal square.
Crowds were seen waiting patiently for floats to roll down on the 1.5 km route, right from 2 pm while King Momo’s float was flagged at Holy Spirit square only after 4 pm by the deputy chief minister Francisco D’souza in the presence of Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado and Margao Carnival Committee president Arthur D’silva and other dignitaries.
Margao also witnessed greater participation this time, with around 107 floats participating in the parade, including five in traditional category, club/institutions category 14, family category 17, sponsor category 3, fun junk category 36 and clown /joker category 32.
Police had tough time controlling the crowd.
Float depicting “Tadllam Novlam “ (delicious Wonders of Rice” presented by Raul Pereira, float by Boys of Sangolda on garbage/ child abuse/ drugs, “Goenche Kumar” by St Anthony Boys of Agalli, Margao, “tribute to Mario Miranda” and float on “Baby Food” by St Sebastian Boys, Mapusa were some of the floats appreciated .by the crowd.

PONDA: Ponda city wore a festive look, while hundreds of people thronged to witness the Carnival float parade in Ponda on Sunday.
Industries Minister Mahadev Naik flagged off the floats parade with the float of King Momo leading. Many floats depicting traditional activities, culture and environment participated.
In all, 36 floats participated including 10 in traditional, 10 in family, six in club, 10 clown and 10 in funk junk cars categories.
The floats parade commenced from Upper Bazzar Ponda and culminated at Aguiar Ground at Ponda.
