MARGAO: The Cuncolim Municipal Council will levy garbage fees on households for waste collection door to door from the New Year.
Instead of charging Rs one per day, the civic body will levy an annual fee of Rs 200 on all households covered under the scheme. The Civic body has worked out different rates for the commercial establishments operating in the town.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas told the media that the civic body had started door to door waste collection a couple of years ago even before other Councils could implement the scheme. “The CMC has been collecting the door to door waste free without levying any charges since the inception of the scheme. To off set the huge financial implications, we decided to levy the minimum charges on the households”, he said.
The CMC Chairperson was speaking to the media at the launch of the new vehicle received from the government to tone up the waste collection infrastructure, The vehicle was launched at the hands of the local Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik,
“We had requested the government to give us two vehicles since the Civic body will start collecting fees door to door from January. We expect to receive the second vehicle within three months”, he said, while thanking local MLA Rajan Naik, Director of Municipal Administration Elvis Gomes and Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza for the vehicle.
The Cuncolim MLA told the media that the government has given the new since it was impressed by the implementation of the door to door waste collection in Cuncolim.
