VASCO: Cyclone Tauktae gave a hard blow to Mormugao taluka on May 15 and May 16, uprooting trees, flattening electricity poles on its way. Gusty winds and heavy rainfall in some places also led to water logging and damage public and private properties.

It was a nightmare for the people of Mormugao as the cyclone raged in with thunderstorm and lightning. On Monday a round to Mormugao taluka revealed that the loss and the damage caused by the cyclone amidst the CoVID19 pandemic is just unbearable and difficult to repair early for the pre-equipped govt machinery. In some parts the plastic waste has come on the roads, an uprooted tree blocked the road to the wards that leads to the cruise terminal. Incidentally, almost all uprooting of trees were coupled with flattening of electric polls that disrupted the electric supply to many parts. A recreational site of Pilot Point at Sada was totally destroyed after the trees couldn’t resist the cyclonic winds.
Heavy rains raise the sea water level and the canoes of several fishermen also come to the shores pushing glass bottles, and other residual waste.
Deputy Collector Sachin Desai said that the impact of the cyclone and bad weather condition was such that the special vaccination drive which was suppose to start on Monday had to be shifted to Tuesday as the metallic sheets placed for the vaccination centre got dismantled due to heavy winds. “The vaccination at several places had to be shut on Sunday due to cyclonic condition. People didn’t turn up that day,” said Desai. Desai didn’t miss to mention that vaccination was open at Ravindra Bhavan, Baina all these days.
Dhiren Banaulikar, mamlatdar of Mormugao revealed that on Sunday Goa Shipyard Ltd gave their man force to assist in post cyclonic situation. “On Monday Navy gave their 15 to 20 jawans to help to disaster management. Employees of electricity department, fire services personnel, municipality workers are jointly been pressed into clearing the things. We are trying our best to bring things back to normal,” he said.
