According to the Goa government’s investment policy, the coal block has the potential to power an 1800 MW power plant and the state has entered into an agreement with a developer who has to provide a minimum power of 15% ie around 270 MW to Goa.
The State also has the first right of refusal for another 10% power i.e. around 180 MW from the power plant.
According to the policy, this power is expected to be available to Goa by mid-2014 with the remaining to be available by 2014 end.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had told the house recently that under this particular allotment, Goa could avail up to five million tonnes of coal. He said that GIDC has been appointed as the nodal agency for handling the project, and it has selected a power developer.
