MARGAO: The Zilla Panchayat of South Goa met on Friday over various issues affecting the functioning of the ZP. Resolutions of legalising dhiriyo, to meet chief minister demanding powers and funds, facilities for zilla panchas and others were passed during the two-hour meeting. The Zilla Panchayat has met in the new premises in the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative complex after waiting for a long time.
Zilla Panchayat Member Wilfred D’sa has moved a resolution to support and promote dhirio in Goa and has demanded that the government should legalise the animal fight on the lines of Jallikattu of Tamil Nadu.
The Zilla Panchayat on Friday resolved to meet chief minister over the issues of devolution of powers to the zilla panchas. The zilla panchas of South and North will meet the CM before the monsoon session of Goa Assembly. The ZPs have also resolved to get their rights and powers by democratic means.
“The Rs 3 crore sanctioned for the zilla panchayat works in too little and too less for any major developmental works. The ZP South has till date received only Rs 1.5 crore rupees from the government,” said Nelly Rodrigues former president of ZP South. Nelly moved a resolution and it was resolved to request the government to divert the Tribal Welfare Fund to the ZPs which generally remains unutilised and is sent back to the treasury.
