VASCO: Water accumulated in the discarded plastic garbage bins at the municipal garage has caused concern among locals, with many fearing that the bins could be perfect mosquito breeding sites in the area.
Some residents from the area told Herald that rainwater has accumulated in the dustbins and it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The villagers fear that breeding of mosquitoes may give rise to malaria if Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) does not take necessary measures.
Pointing to recent flooding in the city, the citizens alleged that the council has turned a blind eye towards choking of the gutters due to the solid waste which is let in the drains by a hotel and a bakery.
They further alleged that a soft drink distributor of a reputed company discards all the plastic straws into the drains and the drains get chocked during monsoon and then the dirty water flows in front of houses and buildings.
When brought to the notice of MMC Vice Chairperson Shekar Khadapkar about the discarded garbage bins lying open in their garage, Khadapkar assured that he will direct the MMC workers to place all the discarded plastic dustbins at the garage upside down.
Khadapkar said the MMC labourers cleared all the drains of the accumulated muck.
