While the BJP boasts of converting Panjim as a Smart City, it has still failed to address the basic issue of road infrastructure that continues to haunt the commuters. The reckless digging of roads before the onset of the monsoons and failure to get it repaired – or say properly repaired – have taken its toll on city roads. Some parts of the roads are in extreme poor condition risking the lives of two-wheeler riders in particular.
“The government makes wearing of helmets compulsory but what about the road conditions. Several roads are in shambles, crying for proper repairs. The authorities do the patch-up of damaged roads but because of poor quality work, it gets wiped off. Where are the rules and regulations now?” said a resident Anita Belekar.
The roads in Panjim, Taleigao, Dona Paula, near KTC bus stand, St Inez (near Caculo Island), Patto (near multi level parking), Bhatulem, Tonca are the worst affected and the deteriorated condition leads to major water logging and traffic chaos during heavy downpour.
“Even if it rains for a while, the patch works get washed out,” complained a two-wheeler rider adding, “Most of the patch-ups are not tarring of the road. The potholes are filled up with stones and mud. In one spell of rain, it is washed out making traveling more risky.”
The Patto Plaza, where some of the government offices, private companies, etc, are situated, also faces similar problem. The stretch, opposite Sesa Ghor going towards Passport Office, requires urgent attention. “The road is in bad shape. Many complaints have fallen on deaf ears. I can imagine what the common man would face when they approach the authorities with similar complaints,” said a senior government officer, whose office is situation along this road.
