MARGAO: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao on Monday said that education is not just about giving children learning and intelligence, but it has a task to make them committed to certain priorities, conviction and values in life.
“Becoming a talented and learned person is not enough. If we are to be good citizens, good followers of our faith and disciples of Jesus, we need to imbibe certain values in our life, certain convictions and priorities and the greatest value in our life is God himself,” the Archbishop said after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Our Lady of Health High School, Cuncolim, at the Cuncolim Municipal hall.
School Manager, Fr Manuel, Headmistress Serena Dias, PTA Chairperson Zino Pereira, Assistant Parish Priest Fr Mariano and Fr Valeriano, besides Diocesan Society of Education, Fr Zepherino were present at the celebration.
In his address, the Archbishop said that school must make students committed and nurtured them like plants. “Clay is neutral, but plant is not neutral. It has got dynamism. Students are like plants, there is inner dynamism and potential, we have to nurture, water can care for them,” he said.
He said as the school looks forward, the head, teachers, parents and everyone must recommit themselves to give their best so that the students can grow as man of character, conscience, conviction, compassion and commitment. “The heart of education is education of the heart so that our students become good persons, committed to values and ever ready to do something beautiful and worthwhile in their life,” he added.
Fr Zepherino, while complimenting the school for entering the golden jubilee year, underlined the need to plan for the next 25 years. He said there are still issues that remain unresolved in the educational field, but which are very important as they would affect the lives of students, parents and the institution.
