In a major administrative reshuffle ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission on Sunday ordered the transfer of officers-in-charge (OCs) and inspectors-in-charge (ICs) from 173 police stations across West Bengal, officials confirmed.
The move, aimed at ensuring free and fair elections, includes the transfer of 31 officers serving under the Kolkata Police jurisdiction. Key constituencies such as Bhabanipur in Kolkata and Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district have also been impacted by the changes.
The reshuffle covers several districts across the state, including Cooch Behar, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Paschim Medinipur, Howrah, and the North and South 24 Parganas, involving inspectors and sub-inspectors holding IC and OC posts.
As per the official order, Soumitra Basu, who was previously serving with the Special Task Force (STF), has been appointed as the new inspector-in-charge of Bhabanipur police station.
The Election Commission’s decision is part of its broader strategy to maintain neutrality in law enforcement and strengthen the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
