CALANGUTE: In a move to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the peak tourism season the North Goa District Magistrate Sneha Gite has announced a temporary ban on all heavy vehicles ahead from entering Calangute-Candolim ahead of New Year’s eve celebrations in the state.

The restrictions will continue from December 25 to January 5 as the coastal belt receives the highest number of tourists during the period in the state.
The notification has specified that no heavy vehicles will be permitted on the Chogm road stretch from Dolphin Circle, Calangute, to Acacia hotel at Sinquerim, covering the entire Calangute-Candolim road.
Besides this, the road from Dolphin Circle to Bandodkar statue at Calangute beach, from St Anthony’s chapel junction in Calangute to KFC junction and Baga circle to Baga end, and Tito’s lane, will also be closed to heavy vehicles.
The Deputy Collector, Mapusa, had already restricted the entry of heavy vehicles to between 5 am and 8.30 am last week following a resolution passed by the Calangute panchayat. Besides tourist vehicles, the ban will also affect the movement of goods vehicles which carry supplies to tourism businesses besides sewage tankers.
The Calangute traffic cell had recently assured that there will be no traffic problems during Christmas and New Year after Calangute Congress block committee members handed over a memorandum about the traffic congestion and hardship faced by commuters due to oversized buses and tourist vehicles entering the village.

Former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes also urged the government to restrict tourists coming in large buses. “A lot of tourists come in buses, park them by the roadside and sleep inside the vehicles. This results in traffic jams,” he said.
