‘Expand IIT campus at present location in Farmagudi’

SANGUEM: Slamming the government’s insistence to build the IIT at Sanguem, panchayat member of  Molcornem Village Panchayat Frazer Da Costa said there was vast open land behind the present IIT campus at Farmagudi, where the government should consider expanding the campus of the technical institute.

Accompanied by a group of anti-IIT agitators, Da Costa toured the present IIT campus at Farmagudi and said it was a better location for the campus when compared to distant Sanguem, where it will only lead to wonton destruction of pristine farm lands and the natural flora and fauna of the village.

Walking around the IIT campus, Da Costa pointed out the vast barren land behind the campus which could be used for the construction of infrastructure facilities for the IIT project.

Da Costa claimed that it does not make any sense for the government to make continuous attempts to establish the IIT project at Sanguem, where it is rightly opposed by the farming community. “The proposed land at Sanguem not only comes under the Command Area Development Programme but it is also home to many streams, animals and a wide variety of wild trees. The Central Government by rejecting the site without even conducting the site visit has acted in the interest of the farmers and the Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai should learn a lesson from the decision taken by the Central Government,” said Da Costa.
