Farmers and fisherfolk elated with bumper harvest of freshwater fish from Maina fields

Citizens urge the panchayat to ensure the fields in the agrarian village are preserved for the benefit of the local community, and not taken over by real estate developers

MARGAO: The local farmers, fishermen, and community members in Maina village are delighted with the impressive catch of freshwater fish that was harvested on Sunday. Simon Barretto, who coordinated the fishing activity, expressed great happiness about the size of the catch, which included freshwater fish such as ‘Kilape’, ‘Ker’, and ‘Tigur’.

Barretto stated that they had auctioned the fish, as per tradition, when the water was released from the fields. The response from buyers was positive, he added. He also emphasized that the fish must be quickly harvested since they would perish if left in the fresh water for long periods.

In addition to freshwater fish, Barretto spoke about the significance of the fields and the crops they produce. He called on the authorities, including the Curtorim-Maina village panchayat, to protect the fields exclusively for the farmers. He referred to a real estate project that planned to build row houses on the land and warned

that it would have destroyed the fields.

Barretto highlighted the panchayat’s role in issuing a stop-work order to the project, but cautioned that the project proponents may approach the High Court to obtain the clearances.

He urged the panchayat to continue backing the locals and preserve the fields for the farmers.
