VASCO: After almost 14 years, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building will finally get a facelift, as Chief Officer J Bhingui has ordered the painting of the exterior of the building.
The MMC building was last painted in 2000 during the tenure of then chief officer N D Agarwal.
“This is a good move by the chief officer to atleast paint the exterior of the building, which was in shambles for the last many years. We the people of Vasco hope that Bhingui during his term as chief officer renovates the heritage building, as it is in dilapidated condition and has not been maintained ever since it’s construction,” said Franco Baretto, a senior citizen from Vasco.
Satish Gawde said a year ago that there were efforts by a local industrialist to paint the building at his own cost, but some politicians objected as they felt that the industrialist would steal the limelight.
Most taxi operators complimented Bhingui for taking up painting work of the building and hoped that he will also restore the MMC gardens. “So many chief officers came and went, but no one had the will to paint the building even form the outside, but this chief officer has shown that he is for Vasco and its development,” added a taxi driver.
When contacted, Bhingui said the painting of the building was taken up as it was shabby to look at. “Work order is already allotted and the cost of the painting work is Rs 7 lakh and it is an online tendering,” added Bhingui.
“The signature project of the chief officer’s bungalow is also e-tendered and the cost is about Rs 4 crore,” said Bhingui.
When asked about beautification of MMC’s children’s park, Bhingui said the beautification work is already taken up by Zuari Agro Chemical Ltd Sancoale and it will be completed by February-end.
