Porvorim is administered not by just one panchayat, but by half a dozen. And some of these panchayats have finally taken the issue of garbage seriously as three village panchayats – located on Porvorim plateau – have come out with a mechanism to collect door-to-door waste on a daily basis.
The initiative has ensured that the heaps of garbage, which had turned into an eye-sore, not only to the residents but visitors as well, have now found their rightful place at the respective dumping sites.
While Penha de Franca has acquired a 1000 sq mtr plot from the Goa Housing Board, located near Kranti Nagar garden; Succor panchayat has acquired land admeasuring 2000 sq mtrs from the Serula communidade. However, Salvador De Mundo is yet to acquire land for setting up mini treatment plant.
At Penha De Franca, workers are employed to segregate wet and dry waste, including plastics and packaging materials. While the dry waste is sold to an agency appointed by the government, the wet waste is converted into manure.
Succor panchayat had also adopted a similar process. However, the Town and Country Planning department has not accorded approval to the village panchayat to set up a mini garbage treatment plant. Once this approval is received Succor has planned to set up a mini treatment plant with the assistance of the State government.
The panchayats have appointed contractors to collect the waste on a regular basis.
