PANJIM: At least three months after the alleged confession by a commercial sex worker that Police Inspector Nilesh Rane and constable Vinod Naik have links with the sex trade, Goa Police have finally appointed SP Chandan Chaudhary to inquire into the allegations.
It was after Herald had exposed the case that was tucked in the Anjuna police station files, that the police top brass sought a preliminary inquiry through Special Branch on April 28, 2016. The report indicted PI Rane and constable Naik based on statements of victims.
The scandal came to light when Anjuna police busted a prostitution racket on April 26, 2016, and rescued two girls from West Bengal. One of the rescued girls revealed the nexus between the policemen and pimps who operated the racket.
Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg said that Chaudhary, the IRB Commandant, will submit a detailed report of her findings to the department. Chaudhary told Herald that she received the case files on Friday and will commence the inquiry this week.
Goa Police was informed of the allegation against the officers by Sub Divisional Magistrate Mapusa through a report on May 6. Earlier, Director General of Police Muktesh Chander had said that he has asked for an inquiry based on the Herald report.
The victim girl in her statement before the SDM had alleged that Rane used to take hafta (protection money) form the pimp and also used to take sexual favours from commercial sex workers when he was posted at Calangute Police Station.
