MARGAO: Fire came back to haunt the traders of Margao’s new market when a shop selling footwear was destroyed late Wednesday evening, once again exposing the inadequate fire fighting arrangements.
Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the adjoining shops, as traders and the fire personnel battled the flames and brought the fire under control. The fire services said the loss is being assessed.
The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm when traders saw smoke billowing from the footwear shop which had already closed for the day. While the fire services responded to the call, the non functioning fire hydrants located in the New Market and the failure on the part of the civic body to build an overhead water tank to supply dedicated water to the fire hydrants came to the fore again.
President of New Market Traders Association Vinod shirodkar slammed the Municipal and PWD authorities for their failure to put the dedicated overhead water tank in place. “How more fires in the market will it spur the civic body and the government authorities to build the overhead tank,” questioned Shirodkar
