PORVORIM: The government’s apathy to the unique cable-stayed bridge at Aldona was further exposed when five more lamps fell off from the corroded poles at the bridge on Thursday afternoon, plunging the bridge in total darkness.
A few weeks ago, three lamps had met with the similar fate and government authorities were quick to point fingers at each other.
“The poor maintenance of the Aldona bridge by the PWD was brought to the notice of Goa Infrastructural Development Corporation Deputy Chairman Pramod Sawant during his visit to Calvim bridge last Friday,” Aldona Deputy Sarpanch Charudatt Panjikar told Herald.
“He had assured then that necessary instructions would be issued to the PWD to look after the maintenance of the bridge. However, there has been no move from the PWD in this matter.”
“Many pedestrians and motorists cross the Aldona bridge every day and it is fortunate that no one injured when these lamps fell off from the corroded poles. If the PWD does not undertake urgent repairs of the bridge, the remaining lamps also will fall down,” feared Panjikar.
