Forest Department begins extensive wildlife census

Forest Department began an extensive wildlife census in all the six wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forest areas from today onwards.
“The census has begun across the state, which will cover wildlife sanctuaries and government owned forest areas,” Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Dr Shashi Kumar said.
The census which will be concluded on May 4 has around 30 volunteers spread throughout the State. Nearly 110 teams, including forest staff and locals are search every inch of forest for the clues or signs to know the movement or existence of animals.
“The census will involve collection of samples; analysis and finally camera trapping method. The survey of carnivorous animals would be conducted initially followed by herbivorous ones,” Dr Kumar explained.
The ongoing animal census will also map the habitat disturbance due to unnatural and natural changes.
Interestingly, the week long census will also predict the presence of tiger in the State.
Last week team of Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun had provided training to the officials and the volunteers involved in the census.
The State Forest Department had earlier conducted such census in 2002 and 2006.
