MARGAO: Despite having warned about the fragility of the footbridge over Varca creek in the House, the footbridge collapsed on Saturday.
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas who had raised this issue in the House on Friday, called for immediate action while also criticising the government for not responding to the issue on time.
“Dumoetem foot bridge over Varca creek collapsed which was discussed in the House. The administration, disaster management setup is perennially in sleep mode. Time to get into preventive maintenance rather than such breakdown maintenance. Double engine equals no engine,” said Viegas.
He recalled that he had warned of the potential disaster at Varca creek foot bridge while speaking on the floor of the house. There he had pointed out that heavy monsoon had severely damaged the bridge, risking its collapse and had said that Immediate action was needed to prevent inconvenience and ensure safe access to Varca beach.
