The increasing heat seems to have taken a toll on the wiring and electronic components too resulting in power failures in the capital city extensively for the last three days.
After multiple breakdowns in March and the beginning of April owing to digging work at Kadamba plateau, the Vidhyut Bhavan is now battling faults on the feeders and transformers.
“The main electricity feeder from Altinho to Panjim market was faulty and the reason for all this is the heat. Our engineers were on the job. The power supply was restored by 3pm today (Monday),” an electricity official informed Herald.
Until the recent power failure, the work of digging of roads at Kadamba plateau by the Public Works Department (PWD) affected many households in and around Goa’s capital city for over 15 days.
“Power cuts have become occurring too often this summer. We understand when there is a frequent breakdown during the monsoons. The electricity department should ensure well in advance that consumers are not put through such hardship. They need to get together and attempt to solve the problem when one arises,” Kalyani Nanodkar, a resident of St Inez said.
Electricity failures even affected commercial establishments, including the main Corporation of the City of Panjm (CCP) market. A Ponda-based vegetable vendor is not surprised with the situation alleging that the government is not bothered about their suffering. “We suffer during every season. In the summer, we sit here and are nearly baked in the heat. Not a single ceiling or table fan is arranged for by the authorities. During rains, there are leakages and we end up getting wet every day. This is a major inconvenience that we are forced to go through,” Vinita, selling locally grown vegetables at the entrance of the market complex, said.
When Herald contacted the electricity department, the higher officials refused to be quoted while saying that they have pooled in all their possible resources so as to ensure that this kind of a problem does not continue to occur.
