PANJIM: The family of murder accused Vinayak Karbotkar, who was killed in a clash between inmates at Sada sub jail last month, has approached the police demanding that the case be handed over to Crime Branch for an impartial investigation.
In a letter to the Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander, Vinayak’s father Tulsidas Karbotkar has charged the jail authorities and the staff of three police stations for the fatal attack on his son.
“The jail authorities, along with the staff of Verna, Vasco and Mormugao police stations, are responsible for the assault (on Vinayak) on account of which he sustained serious and grave injuries, resulting in his death in judicial custody,” the letter, filed through advocate Galileo Teles states. He alleges that Vinayak was intentionally inflicted injuries.
Vinayak was killed at Sada sub jail, Vasco on the night of January 23 after a fight broke out between two groups of jail mates. Some jail inmates were injured in the clash and the situation was brought under control only after a police force entered the jail premises. Vinayak was accused of murdering history sheeter Ashpak Bhengre in Colvale jail in June 2016.
Apprehending that police would tamper with the investigation as they themselves are witnesses, Tulsidas demanded that the case be transferred to Crime Branch failing which he will move the High Court of Bombay at Goa. Mormugao Police are currently investigating the case registered under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempted murder) and other charges of IPC.
