PANJIM: The Goa High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has urged Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, to appoint a fourth judge in Goa to replace Justice BP Deshpande.

In a letter addressed to Justice Upadhyaya, GHCBA President, Senior Advocate Jose Elmano Coelho Pereira, stated, “By our letter dated September 26, 2024, the Managing Committee of the Association had requested you to post a fourth judge in Goa to address the requirement for hearing final matters pertaining to civil and criminal proceedings in the High Court of Bombay at Goa. This request was made well before the retirement of Justice BP Deshpande.”
“Now that he has retired, the need for appointing a fourth judge is paramount, notwithstanding the fact that Justice Nivedita Mehta is posted in Goa and sits on the Division Bench. The workload of Justice Valmiki Menezes is also considerable, given that Justice B.P. Deshpande’s board was already sufficiently loaded, including with bail matters,” he added.
“Now that Justice Deshpande has retired, Justice Menezes is burdened with his matters. In these circumstances, the members of the Bar have requested the Managing Committee to make this appeal to you for the appointment of a fourth judge,” Advocate Pereira said.
