Goa Power Minister Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar has called for a reduction in the intensity of Narkasur competitions across the state, citing concerns over the glorification of the demon Narkasur and its negative impact on youth.
Dhavalikar highlighted recent incidents, including one where a car was set on fire with firecrackers, as evidence of the harmful influence of such celebrations. “The glorification of Narkasur is leading to destructive behaviour,” he said.

Clarifying that he is not against the tradition itself, Dhavalikar stated, “I am not saying the tradition of Narkasur should stop completely, but its intensity needs to be reduced.” He noted that earlier, effigies were burnt locally and simply, whereas now, groups spend months preparing elaborate figures and “razzling around the entire night before Diwali,” which he believes injects toxicity into participants’ lives.
The minister urged the community to self-regulate, stressing that while the government cannot impose a total ban, responsible celebration is essential to preserve the festival’s true spirit.
