PANJIM: To highlight the increasing number of fatalities on roads, GOACAN will hold an awareness campaign ‘Goa Remembrance Week’ to educate the road users. Earlier, the NGO had organised a vigilance week.
GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins informed that the campaign which begins from Monday, is being organised to bring focus on the increasing number of deaths and grievous injuries due to road accidents in the State. The week-long awareness activity will conclude with the theme ‘Roads have Stories’ on November 18 — the World Day of Remembrance.
He said that as part of its Road Safety and Traffic Management Campaign, the NGO has been observing this week since the year 2009. “During this coming week, GOACAN will reach out to various government departments and corporations with the message of road safety so as to get a firm commitment of involvement at the end of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020,” he added.
Martins said that the volunteers of consumer forums and the members of Road Safety & Traffic Management Committees of panchayats and municipal councils would share messages on road safety in their respective neighbourhood.
“We will also participate in meetings, site inspections and delegations, besides submitting letters of concern and proposals for action to various government agencies. As a part of the week, GOACAN will also popularise the Road Safety Patrol (RSP) & Traffic Warden Schemes of the Goa Traffic Police and the Goa State Interim Compensation to Road Accident Victims 2015 which is implemented by the Directorate of Transport,” he added.
