PANJIM: Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai on Monday said he has urged the Centre to provide assistance to flood-affected people in Goa. He said the estimated losses suffered by citizens in Goa are around Rs 500 crore. Thousands of houses have been estimated to have been damaged or destroyed in the rains along with damage to both private and government assets.

On another note, the Governor will undertake an afforestation drive on the campus of Raj Bhavan on Tuesday and will also distribute saplings to the staff of Raj Bhavan.
During cyclone Tauktae that severely hit Goa in May, about 100 trees on the Rai Bhavan estate were damaged/uprooted. In order to make up for the loss of the trees, Raj Bhavan will undertake the drive to plant 500 fruit bearing and medicinal trees during this monsoon season.
This drive is being organised by Forest Department in association with the Raj Bhavan’s Horticulture Department. The vast estate of Raj Bhavan is host to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Meanwhile, Governor of Himachal Pradesh and former Goa Speaker Rajendra Arlekar met the Goa Governor on Monday. It was a courtesy call and the meeting lasted for about 45 minutes, where the two recently-appointed Governors exchanged views.
