Govt gets more time to frame scrap yard policy

The Bombay High Court at Goa on Monday granted more time to the State Government to submit its policy on scrap yards with a warning that if the policy were not ready by the next date of hearing, it would pass an appropriate interim order.
A Division Bench of Justice B P Dharmadhikari and Justice U D Salvi issued the warning while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a law student Jatin Ramaiya.
Ramaiya said that some scrap yards in Ponda are located within residential areas and that could prove very hazardous if there is any accident in the area; and some of them operated illegally.
Responding to the petition, the State Government through advocate general told the Court that action was initiated against illegal scrap yards; and, there was a proposal to shift scrap yards to industrial estates. Moreover a policy was being framed in this respect.
The hearing had had been adjourned a couple of times on request of the State government, as the guidelines regulating the scrap yards were not ready.
When the matter came up for hearing on Monday morning the government advocate again sought more time to frame the guidelines.
Adjourning the hearing to July 27, the Court warned that it would pass an interim order if the guidelines were not ready by then.
