Govt notifies draft rules on assessment of house tax

The government has notified the draft rules on assessment of house tax making residential premises liable for a tax of only Rs 1 per annum, irrespective of size and type. All premises used for business will however have to pay tax equivalent to one month's rent.

PANJIM: The government has notified the draft rules on assessment of house tax making residential premises liable for a tax of only Rs 1 per annum, irrespective of size and type. All premises used for business will however have to pay tax equivalent to one month’s rent.

However, in case any part of any residential house is used as a shop or office or any commercial activity or basically any other activity other than residential, then the tax at different rates will apply for the part that is used for non -residential purpose.

The proposed draft rules will further amend the Goa Panchayat Raj (Imposition of taxes, fees and other dues) Rules, 1998, published in the Official Gazette, Series I No. 20, dated 13th August, 1998, The rules will come into effect within 15 days from the date of this notification. 

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 153 and 155 read with sub-section (1) of section 240 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 (Goa Act 14 of 1994), the Government of Goa hereby makes the following rules so as to further amend the Goa Panchayat Raj (Imposition of taxes, fees and other dues) Rules, 1998…,” the notification Mr Narayan R Sawant, Director & ex officio Joint Secretary (Panchayats) says.

The cabinet cleared proposal was announced by chief minister Manohar Parrikar recently.
