PANJIM: Admitting that water supply from Tillari dam is irregular, the State government has decided to lay 23 kms long underground water pipeline to resolve the water crisis.

At present, open canals carry the water from Tillari dam to Goa.
In a statement issued, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that the Tillari Irrigation Project, a joint venture of Goa and Maharashtra government, provides water supply for drinking and agriculture purpose to Goa.
Sawant admitted that water supply from Tillari dam is irregular, as the open canal system, bursts every year on the Maharashtra side, causing major hardship to the people of Goa.
“The government is now planning to lay 23 kms long underground pipeline, as a permanent solution towards ensuring uninterrupted water supply,” the Chief Minister said.
He said that through the pipeline, the water would be sourced directly from the Tillari dam instead of depending on the open canal system.
The decision was taken during the Standing Committee meet on Tillari Irrigation Project, held recently.
During the Winter Session of the State Legislative Assembly held in January, the MLAs from Bicholim, Mayem had raised concern over irregular supply of water from Tillari dam and frequent breach to canal on the Maharashtra side.
The State government has decided to undertake a survey for the underground pipeline project.
The project was conceived to irrigate 23,654 ha of land that includes 16,978 in Goa and 6,676 in Maharashtra.
