Govt sleeps over constitution of Co-op Society courts
Around 3000 cases pending

Litigations before Registrar of Co-operative Societies have increased tremendously in the last one year. Pending litigations range between 2000-3000, and have increased since the adoption of Goa State Co-operative Societies Act, in January, this year.
The new Act replaces Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, which Goa followed in the absence of its own Act.
Litigations have been piling because there are no co-operatives courts to conduct hearing.
The Goa State Co-operative Societies Act, has provision to appoint co-operatives authorities or courts to conduct hearings. But, even a year after adoption of the new Act, the State government has not completed the process of appointment of authorities.
But, our sources said, they started with the process of appointing authorities and it will take some time before all appointments are made.
Meanwhile, they have requested the government to allow them to conduct hearings as per provisions of the Old Act — Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, until courts are constituted as per provisions in the new Act.
There are 2400 different types of co-operative societies and maximum pending cases pertains to urban co-operative societies.
