Govt to draw up master plan for Gandhi Market redevelopment

The long-pend ing redevelopment of Mar gao’s Gandhi Market is set to move forward, with PWD Minister Digambar Kamat announcing that the State Government will appoint a consultant to prepare a comprehensive master plan to upgrade the market and address its long-stand ing civic issues. The decision comes amid concerns over waterlog ging inside the market and flooding in nearby resi dential areas during the monsoon.

Kamat, accom panied by Margao Munici pal Council Administrator Srinet Kothwale, inspected the market after residents complained that rainwater from the market was enter ing their homes. Following the inspection, Kamat said the consultant would conduct a detailed assessment of Gandhi Mar ket and recommend meas ures to modernise its infra structure while examining the surrounding areas to improve overall planning.

The study will cover drain age, internal circulation, public access and other civ ic infrastructure required for the smooth functioning of the busy commercial hub. Responding to allegations that some shops and com mercial establishments have been built over drainage channels, Kamat declined to comment, saying it would be premature to draw conclu sions before the consultant completed the assessment.
