Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott has urged the Fisheries Minister to enforce the fishing ban strictly for an extended period of 90 days, as numerous illegal activities reportedly take place at sea. GRE and other traditional fishermen organisations stated that the fishing ban is not meant for canoes who have Court permission to fish throughout the year. They have cautioned the department about potentially dire consequences if boats from other states venture into Goa’s waters during the ban.
Additionally, GRE has made requests for a full-time fisheries director. The request reflects the importance of having dedicated leadership to address the concerns and challenges faced by the fishing community. A full-time director can provide focused attention to fisheries-related issues, develop sustainable policies, and ensure effective implementation of regulations.
