MARGAO: The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has notified ‘Methodology for water harvesting Green Credit’ under which both the districts of Goa have been included.
Vide a notification published on October 23, 2023 in the Gazette of India, the ministry has asked people to submit their comments, objections, suggestions within 15 days to the ministry.

In all 749 districts of the country have been brought under this notification including both the districts of Goa. The districts are divided into four categories depending upon the annual rainfall rexeived, which are as follows:
Less than 500 mm – 18 districts; 500 – 1,000 mm — 287 districts; 1000 – 2000 mm — 314 districts; and above 2000 mm – 121. Both the districts of Goa are included in this category.
The notification states that water harvesting structures can be erected on any government, panchayat, community or individual land, provided it is free of all encumbrances.
It recommends construction of earthen ponds or poly tanks depending upon the location of the land and with a minimum capacity of 100 cu mts or 1 lakh litres and maximum of 10,000 cu mts.
Those eligible to apply for Green Credit to harvest water include individuals, co-operatives, forest management committees, sustainable agricultural enterprises, self help groups, ecological development committee and urban as well as rural local bodies.
