The association asked the SGPDA and Margao Municipal Council to revoke the permissions provided for a construction on the ground.

AGBA representative Andrew Sequeira said, “People have been using this ground for the last 100 years for various purposes including playing and functions too.”

The association recalled that the former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had given assurance to them for protection of the ground. “If the permission is given and the work begins we will agitate,” said Sequeira.

Fabrica ground admeasuring 9,360 sqmts is being used by several schools such as T B Cunha, St Sebastian High School etc and by surrounding residents of Margao, Fatorda for sports activities, walk by the senior citizens, government departments for conducting several big events etc.

The AGBA said, “They had repeatedly brought to the notice of SGPDA that the land is traditionally used for recreational purposes even till date by the schools, senior citizens etc.”

It may be recalled that the MMC had resolved that they would acquire the land and later gave up due to lack of funds. Later, the AGBA further agreed to allow development of the land on the three sides leaving the central area as a ground which later never materialised.
