About 1000 of the documents are in the field of social sciences, another 1000 in languages and literature and over 1600 in science and technology that can be accessed through the ‘Publications Repository’ on www.unigoa.ac.in.
“These documents are published in a wide-range of publications from prestigious high impact research journals to newspapers, while some are published in books and thesis,” said GU Registrar V P Kamat. This facility will be launched at the university’s executive council meeting on September 30.
The repository makes about 1600 of these publications available in the full-text form, while abd bibliographic details are given for the rest. The university is in the process of enlarging the full-text documents in the repository.
There are about 70 such repositories in India, most of which belong to research and academic institutions of prestige such as IITs and research Institutes of National importance. Kamat stated that very few Indian state universities have made such an effort and GU thus becomes one of a handful to have its institutional repository.
The publications in GU’s repository cover a wide spectrum of contributions including studies of local, national and of global importance and on aspects that are beyond the political boundary. The concept of such repositories was born in the early 21st century and many institutions of prestige have provided access to their contributions on the web. By doing so, institutions have benefited by raising institutional visibility and relevance, forging partnerships with the community outside the institution and proven the value of institutions to the public in general and funding agencies in particular.
“Such an effort benefits students, and is useful in building institutional profile by attracting citations to the contributions,” he said.
