MAPUSA: Goa Waste Management Corporation will accept five tonnes of wet waste generated under the Mapusa Municipal Council from Monday, said Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo.

“Mapusa Municipal Council had approached the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to accept at least five tonnes of wet waste for treatment. We have approved of the demand, and from Monday, we will accept five tonnes. In future, we can accept 10 tonnes also, but the MMC has to utilise its workers well as they are paid for this work,” said Lobo.
The Minister said that if the Mapusa Municipal Council is willing to help, then he would send an engineer from SWMC to manage waste from Mapusa.
Lobo said that Mapusa generates 35-40 tonnes of wet waste every day but does not have its own facility to treat them.
“We see dark spots everywhere, including near the Deputy Collector’s office in Mapusa, which has to be changed by creating awareness amongst people,” said Lobo.
“Waste management is one of the several problems, which needs to be sorted out. During the pandemic, the waste generation had come down to 20 tonnes, but it is slowly increasing again. It is also noticeable that the council is not even collecting 50 per cent of the waste generated,” said Lobo.
