Before the activity came to a stop around two years ago, anti-social elements enjoying the right political connections used to collect protection money from the vendors and ensure that a fixed hafta went to the law enforcing agencies to look the other way. Those in the know said that not all goods sold at the bazaar are stolen ones. Though a few anti-socials elements used to sell stolen goods, the entire activity came to be known as Chor Bazaar given that the vendors sold second-hand items including consumer durables and garments.
