Under the banner ‘Sankalp Theatre Cultural Institution, Curchorem, Hortencio Pereira’s tiatr ‘Hanv Vetam’ focuses on the sin and the sinner. Every sinner has a past and a future too, reveals the writer and director.
The story revolves around the DySP Jerisco (Parag Sabnis), his wife Prisca (Paulin Fernandes), son, Ronaldo (Camilo Mascarenhas) and daughter Yvonne (Suzan Fernandes). Upright Jerisco turns sympathetic towards a rogue and goon Ronnie (Hortencio Pereira) and decides to shelter him in his house after his release.
Strong opposition follows from Prisca and her children. Jerisco’s kin fears that Ronnie’s presence in the family will bring only disgrace and shame. But the police inspector is determined to go by his principles and follows his conviction.
Due to earlier rivalry, Atmaram (Jeronimo Carvalho) is all set to get Ronnie out of Jerisco’s house and takes Prisca’s assistance to fulfil his mission. Meanwhile, Ronaldo and Yvonne tread the wrong path and go astray.
Who serves as a saviour to whom and what follows next is worth the watch during the second half of the drama. The concluding act has an unexpected twist and a convincing climax. ‘Hanv Vetam’ is a well scripted tiatr, with sleek direction. The storyline flows smoothly, with various developments after every act.
Comic acts by Zuzik (Natalino Vales), Julie (Berna Rodrigues) and their music students add colour to those lighter moments on stage. A rich tribute to late maestro Emiliano da Cruz at the Escola Muzik de Zuzik is worth mentioning.
Parag Sabnis stands tall in his dialogue delivery and body language. Although short in stature, Paulin is convincing. Suzan and Camilo display enough confidence in their acts. Jeronimo Carvalho is commanding and prompt as a villain. But Hortencio takes the major share of appreciation for his outstanding character and wins sympathy from the audience.
Although after every act, the respective curtain failed to come down promptly, the stage set by Urmila Gaonkar, besides the light design by Satish Dessai deserve a mention.
Songs rendered by Raiza, Lyanne, Renath, Natalino, Hortencio, Caziton, Shane Shawn Sequeira and Reyhan Vales were a treat to the ears.
