Historic Wins for Goan-Origin Leaders in UK Council Elections

More than 20 candidates of Goan origin won seats in the recent UK local elections held on May 7, 2026, with results announced across Brent, Hounslow, Swindon, and Croydon councils, home to large Goan communities. Counting continued into Saturday, showcasing victories from Labour, Conservative, and other parties.

Labour’s Angela Joyce D’Souza became the first Goan woman elected to Brent Council, securing Wembley Hill ward; she pledged action on safer streets, cleaner neighborhoods, and family support amid cost-of-living pressures. Conservative Floyd de Sa also won there.

Hounslow victories included Conservatives Vilber M De Costa in Cranford, Vivek Ganachari and Alister de Sa in Hounslow West, Salvador Pereira in Heston Central, plus Labour’s Pamila Rodrigues in Hounslow Central. Labour’s Jose Piedade Fernandes claimed Croydon’s Thornton Heath ward.

In Swindon, Labour candidates such as former mayor Imtiyaz Shaikh, Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, Ana Rosada Fernandes, Princia Fernandes, and Jocelina D’Souza triumphed, joined by parish winners like Ana R Fernandes and Tony Fernandes. Conservatives Anabelle Pegado, Savio Telles, Albano Lourenco, and Rouchell V Cardoso succeeded, with Pegado retaining Broadgreen borough seat.

Former Watford mayor Rabi Martins praised the milestone, noting Goans now span all major parties, a far cry from his solitary 1994 Lib Dem win—and hailed their societal integration. Pegado, niece of ex-minister Carmo Pegado, committed to voicing Broadgreen residents’ needs.
