Candidates of Goan origin emerged among the standout performers in the 2025 United Kingdom council elections, securing important victories across boroughs such as Brent, Hounslow, Croydon and Swindon. The results once again highlighted the growing political influence of the Goan diaspora in British local governance.
The council elections, held on Thursday with counting continuing through Friday and Saturday, saw several Goan-origin representatives from Labour and Conservative parties win seats across different councils in the UK.
One of the major highlights came in Brent Council, where Angela Joyce D’Souza created history after winning the Wembley Hill ward for the Labour Party. Her victory marked the first time a woman from her community had been elected to Brent Council.
Calling it a “historic moment,” D’Souza said her campaign focused on safer streets, cleaner neighbourhoods and helping families deal with the rising cost of living. She also promised to work for all residents of Wembley Hill regardless of political affiliation.
The Wembley Hill ward also saw Floyd de Sa register victory for the Conservative Party, underlining the strong representation of Goan-origin candidates across political lines.
GOAN DIASPORA STRENGTHENS POLITICAL PRESENCE IN UK
Former Watford mayor Rabi Martins praised the increasing participation of Goan-origin leaders in British politics and noted how community representation has expanded steadily over the years.
Many of the successful candidates campaigned on local civic issues including cleaner neighbourhoods, housing, community welfare, safer streets and support for working families. Community leaders said the results reflected the trust and support Goan-origin representatives continue to receive from residents across the UK.
