PANJIM: The loss making industrial estates at Daman and Diu, consisting of 167 industrial units, are set to be transferred from the Goa government to their respective local Union Territory administration, with the Manohar Parrikar-led cabinet granting its approval for transfer of assets and liabilities.
The proposal, adopted following a resolution by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), was pending for execution since 1992.
The leases with167 small and medium scale units, located on 207 plots at the industrial estates of Daman and Diu, signed 30 years ago expired in 2015, and were not renewed.
The Collector, Union Territory of Daman and Diu, had on two occasions – in 2013 and in 2015 – rejected IDC’s request for extension of lease for the industrial estates by 69 years, pending execution of transfer of assets and liabilities.
Speaking to Herald, IDC Managing Director Narayan Gad confirmed that the Cabinet granted its nod to transfer the industrial estates and liabilities to the respective administration. “The Cabinet approval was received a month back, and the proposal has been sent to the Advocate General for legal vetting,” he said.
Gad further said that the administration of the Union Territory has been informed about the State Cabinet decision.
The officer recalled that the IDC had in 1992 had passed the resolution for transfer of industrial estate and accordingly, the Union Ministry for Commerce and Industries, had granted No Objection Certificate for the proposal in 1993.
“We have drafted the proposal based on the modalities, as approved by the Union Ministry for Home Affairs in their policy in regards to transfer of assets and liabilities, in 1998,” he said.
