Illegal foundry found at Areal

MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal village was back in the news on Friday with an inspection unearthing an illegal foundry in a scrap yard as villagers renewed their demands for the closure of all illegal scrap yards dotting the village countryside.

A joint inspection carried out by the Areal panchayat, local activists Peter Viegas and Freddy Travasso and the police revealed that a native of Bihar was carried out melting of scrap to produce aluminium bars. Sarpanch Julio Monteiro said the Bihar native was earlier involved in a similar activity near the Carbon factory and has now shifted his operation after the village Panchayat initiated the process of inspecting the illegal scrap yards.
Asserting that the Panchayat is determined to put a stop to the illegal scrap yards in the village, the Sarpanch pointed out that the Panchayt would soon submit a detailed report on the status of scrap yards in the village to the district Collector, South and the Goa State Pollution Control Board for necessary action.  “The Sarpanch said the illegal activity was stopped by the Panchayat last year but has resurfaced at a different spot now. We will also request the police to initiate action against the illegal activity”, he said.
Villager Freddy Travasso said that the govt should support the Panchayat body in stopping all illegal scrap yards.
