India produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat England by 38 runs in the opening Women’s T20I in Chelmsford and take an early lead in the series.

After recovering from a shaky start to post a strong total of 188/7, the Indian bowlers delivered a disciplined display to restrict England to 150/8 in their chase.

England opted to bowl first and struck immediately through Lauren Bell, who removed stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana off the very first ball of the match. Bell struck again in the same over as Shafali Verma miscued a shot to leave India in early trouble.

However, India quickly bounced back thanks to a costly over from Issy Wong, who conceded 27 runs, including two sets of five wides. Yastika Bhatia capitalised on the loose bowling with a flurry of boundaries as India regained momentum during the Powerplay.

India raced to 73/2 in the first six overs, with Yastika and Jemimah Rodrigues stabilising the innings and accelerating the scoring rate. While Yastika brought up her half-century steadily, Jemimah played aggressively and reached her fifty in style by hitting debutant Tilly Corteen-Coleman for a six.

The pair added a crucial century partnership before England fought back with quick wickets in the middle overs. India briefly lost momentum, but a valuable cameo from Deepti Sharma helped the visitors finish with a competitive total close to the 190-run mark.

In response, England struggled to gain early control as India’s bowlers kept things tight. Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey both failed to convert their starts, with Kranti Goud striking twice in the Powerplay. Arundhati Reddy also maintained pressure from the other end as England managed only 43 runs in the first six overs.

Amy Jones and Heather Knight attempted to revive the chase with an attacking partnership. Jones brought up a brisk half-century off 32 deliveries, but India’s disciplined bowling in the middle overs prevented England from building sustained momentum.

Kranti Goud and Arundhati Reddy bowled economical spells that increased the pressure before Shree Charani broke the partnership. Nandni Sharma then delivered the decisive blow by striking in successive deliveries, including the crucial wicket of Amy Jones.

England lost momentum completely in the death overs, scoring only 30 runs in the final five overs as India sealed a convincing victory to go 1-0 up in the T20I series.
