Nearly 600 Students Flee Maharashtra Tribal Hostel After ‘Possession’ Rumours

Authorities in Maharashtra’s Amravati district are dealing with an unusual situation after nearly 600 tribal students reportedly left a government-run residential school following rumours that some girls at the hostel were “possessed”.

The incident began on July 22, when four girls at the tribal residential school in Doma village of Chikhaldara taluka reportedly began behaving unusually. Officials said the girls were seen crying and laughing uncontrollably, with mental stress being considered a possible reason for their behaviour.

The school, located in the tribal-dominated Melghat region of northern Maharashtra, houses around 810 boys and girls and is managed by the Tribal Development Department.

As word spread among the students that the girls had been affected by supernatural forces, fear reportedly gripped the hostel. Over the following few days, nearly 600 students left the premises, believing the hostel to be “haunted”, officials said.

Authorities are now working to address the situation and reassure the students and their families, while the circumstances surrounding the girls’ unusual behaviour are being examined.
