India will look to keep their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) Final alive when they face Sri Lanka in a crucial two-match Test series beginning August 15 in Galle.
The Shubman Gill-led Indian side currently sits fifth in the WTC standings with four wins and four defeats from nine matches, giving them a points percentage (PCT) of 48.15. With the race for the WTC Final intensifying, the series against Sri Lanka could prove crucial to India’s campaign.

Sri Lanka are currently sixth in the standings with a PCT of 41.67, making the two-Test contest important for both teams.
India have previously featured in two WTC Finals but suffered defeats against New Zealand and Australia. With the road to this year’s final appearing increasingly competitive, India will need a strong performance in Sri Lanka to improve their position and maintain their qualification hopes.
A 2-0 series victory would lift India’s PCT to 57.58. However, that would not be enough to move them from fifth place, as Bangladesh would continue to occupy fourth position with a PCT of 58.33.
Meanwhile, a 1-1 draw would see India’s PCT rise marginally to 48.48. Despite the result, India would retain fifth place because Sri Lanka’s PCT would increase to only 44.44, leaving them short of the mark required to overtake India.
The upcoming series, therefore, carries significant importance for India as they look to strengthen their WTC campaign and remain in contention for a place in the final.
