It is pertinent to note that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson herself has indicated that proper procedures were not followed at the time of awarding the work to a contractor. As such, the SCM feels that the council must come clean on the issue.
“The excuse that the council had to take a sudden decision to shift the fair to the SGPDA ground can not justify the wrong done at the cost of municipal revenue, which the council always craves for. In fact, in 2009, the fair was held at the same ground by me as the former chairperson. The fees for the stalls were collected by the council directly at the office,” said Savio Coutinho, SCM convenor.
He was speaking at a meeting of the SCM in Margao on Friday to discuss issues to be taken up in the interest of the town. He further stated, “The SCM has already made it known to the public that identification of revenue leakages is top on the agenda. As such, the council has to be cautious about this matter concerning revenue,” said Savio, adding, “We shall make correspondence for details of this issue”
SCM also stated that it had initially decided to give the new council time to settle, but it appeared that the council has sharpened their skills quickly.
