Ironic accolades for men in khaki
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, JULY 19
Continuously in the line of fire for their alleged connection with the drug mafia, the police were in for some patting from Opposition MLA Dayanand Mandrekar who branded the force as “very clean and honest”.
Don’t mistake this for real patting. Mandrekar’s statements of praise for the men in khaki were filled with sarcasm rubbing salt to their wounds. There is vast difference from the police of the past and now, he said in a manner that was ridiculing.
In a speech filled with sarcasm during discussion on budget on the first day of the Goa Legislative Assembly, the MLA stated, “The police of now are very clean, so clean that the Chief Minister should give contract to make gold medals for personnel from the rank of DIG to police constables and the honour could be bestowed on them during the Liberation Day function.”
Mandrekar said he was scared to talk about the police because if he did so there was no guarantee that he would reach home safe. They have the capacity to catch me somewhere on the way and pack me off, he mentioned. He said the height of corruption in the force is such that only God can investigate the same.
