MARGAO: An irate mob stoned a KTC bus late Saturday evening after the speeding bus knocked down a pedestrian woman and ran over her legs at Arlem-Margao, meters away from the Durga petrol pump.
Santana Vaz, 52, a resident of Arlem, had to be rushed to Goa Medial College at Bambolim from Hospicio with fractured legs and unbearable pain.
Soon after the accident, the agitated crowd blocked traffic on the busy road to protest against the accident and the delay in the arrival of the ambulance at the spot. The local residents pointed out that the police authorities have turned a blind eye to drunken and rash driving on the road.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 8 pm when the bus proceeding from Margao to Ponda knocked down the woman.
A resident Rosario Fernandes said the speeding bus ran over her legs causing her grievous injuries. What agitated the crowd was that the KTC driver made good his escape after the incident.
“We wanted to know whether the driver was driving under the influence of liquor or not,” he said Residents also complained that though they have been demanding a speed breaker along the road, the authorities have done nothing in this regard.
“This road has witnessed many an accident, claiming many lives, but the authorities are yet to act”, another resident said, alleging that drunken driving on the route goes unpunished.
Margao PI Sudesh Naik along with a posse of policemen rushed to the spot to avert a major law and order situation. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai also visited the spot to pacify the agitated residents. The police later towed the ill-fated bus from the site.
