MARGAO: With just two months to go for the one-year deadline set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the municipalities and panchayats in South Goa yet to identify waste management sites.
District Collector Ajit Roy, IAS, has acknowledged that there is a lot of ground to cover.
Speaking after a meeting the officials, Roy said, “The National Green Tribunal has given directions on handling solid waste and wet waste. There is a list of directions and we have to ensure 100 per cent door to door collection and scientific disposal of wet as well of dry garbage according to the directions.”
The collector said that many steps are involved in the entire process.
“For the last six months, we have been holding this meeting continuously every 15 days. Each and every village has to identify garbage management site. Almost all the village have identified garbage management site. The works of setting up various facilities as well as wet waste treatment bio-digester that is also in the process which may take some time. But very soon we will have a network of such waste management sites in South Goa as well as North Goa,” the collector said.
The collector also underlined that the disposal of biomedical waste and handling is the responsibility of the waste generators and not the State. There are certain guidelines for handling the waste and the Collectorate has made a list of government hospitals and clinics and handed it to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
“The direction has been given to all private clinics as well as government hospitals on handling the biomedical waste,” the collector said.
“After every meeting, there is an improvement, but we still have a lot of ground to cover,” Roy added.
