CALANGUTE: Ongoing works for various projects in and around Calangute barely days ahead of the monsoon has caused concern among locals, but Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has insisted that the major works would be stopped as a precautionary measure.
“Developmental works in Calangute, Candolim, Arpora-Nagoa and Parra are still underway with road-widening work going on in full swing. The roads are still being dug and this could pose a serious threat to life and property during the rains. This is not the time to carry out developmental works and it should have been done well in advance,” complained a resident, who declined to be named.
“The usually safer routes like the roads from St Alex Church to Saligao, Calangute to Nagoa and Candolim market to Candolim Church are become unsafe due to ongoing developmental works. There are electricity poles in the middle of the road due to road widening work from Calangute to Nagoa. This could pose a serious threat to motorists especially at night and even during the rains,” the resident added.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo admitted to the ongoing work but assured that major developments works would be completed before the monsoon, adding that further cutting of roads would be stopped immediately as a precautionary measure.
“The developmental works being carried out include the construction of retaining walls to widen the roads. All the road-cutting works will be asked to stop henceforth as a precautionary measure and the potholes will be filled up,” said Lobo.
“In fact, we have carried out repair works at the Circle of Dreams and I will direct the GSIDC officials to fill up the pothole to avoid a mishap at the Circle of Dreams.”
“All electricity poles on the road will be removed before the onset of the monsoon. I have asked the GSIDC Engineers to expedite the matter and get the poles removed by paying the necessary fees to the electricity department,” Lobo added.
