MARGAO: In a development that promotes women’s empowerment in grassroots local bodies, Anthea Lynn Pereira was elected unopposed as the new Sarpanch of the village panchayat of Majorda-Utorda-Calata.

By doing so, Pereira, 26, is possibly the youngest woman Sarpanch to be elected in Goa. It may be recalled that in the past, in Agonda village, Prettal Sweezel Fernandes, had been elected as the Sarpanch of Agonda panchayat when she was 27 years old.
In Majorda, the elections for the new Sarpanch post were necessitated following the resignation of former Sarpanch Linet Vaz on November 5.
At the meeting held on Wednesday morning, Pereira received the backing of her fellow panch members, who expressed their commitment to taking up all-around development works in the village.
Interestingly, Pereira’s grandmother, Lilia Martins Pereira, was one of Goa’s first woman Sarpanchas, elected in the year 1968.
Pereira reflected on her grandmother’s role as the Sarpanch and how her becoming a Sarpanch is not only following in her grandmother’s footsteps but also giving her a great opportunity to serve the village.
“I thank my parents for being my pillars of strength throughout this journey and all the members for supporting me to take this new challenging role. With a promise of transparency and active participation, I am determined to create a village that reflects the aspirations of my people. Being the youngest, I have a vision to make my village of Majorda a model of progress, unity, and harmony,” said Pereira.
